The COVID-19 pandemic has swept through the nation like a tsunami. The damage will swell over the next many months as families face the loss of jobs and savings disappear. Those never in poverty before will find their lives disrupted facing crises in food, housing, healthcare and safety. Those who were living on the economic margins before the pandemic are now facing even more dire circumstances.
Heartland Flood Help is a project of the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) – the single largest funder of civil legal aid for low-income Americans in the nation. LSC operates as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that promotes equal access to justice and provides grants for high-quality civil legal assistance to low-income Americans.
In April, LSC awarded the $50 million it received in the CARES Act to legal services providers who are helping low-income clients facing job loss, evictions, domestic violence and other problems stemming from the pandemic.
On May 11, The Legal Services Corporation (LSC) held a second briefing exploring how legal services providers are helping domestic violence survivors in the face of COVID-19. Representatives Susan Brooks (IN-5), Debbie Dingell (MI-12), Gwen Moore (WI-4) and David Price (NC-4) joined Supreme Court of North Carolina Chief Justice Cheri Beasley to deliver remarks.
Project C.A.P.E. is scheduled for Wednesday, August 5, 2020, between 1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. at One City, 610 Independence Street in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. This is an employment event that does more than bring employers and job seekers together. LSSM will be conducting an Expungement Clinic to help job seekers with charges on their criminal record and will be given an opportunity to clear certain charges from their record in order to improve job opportunities.
Legal Services of Southern Missouri (LSSM) is hosting its annual Cup of Justice Golf Classic Tournament on Monday, September 21, 2020. The event will be held at Highland Springs Country Club, Springfield, Missouri. Registration and lunch will begin at noon. The four person scramble shot gun start tournament will begin at 1:30 p.m. Registration fee is $500 per team. Mulligans are available.

The Warren E. Hearnes Memorial Golf Tournament is scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2020. The tournament will be held at the Hidden Trails Country Club in Dexter, MO. All proceeds of the tournament support Legal Services of Southern Missouri’s mission of providing equal access to justice in Southeast Missouri.
In the interest of everyone’s health and well-being, our golf tournament scheduled for August 21, 2020 has been cancelled.
