Legal Aid Programs in Missouri The support of the private bar is vital to the delivery of legal services to our low-income clients in Missouri.  Without the support of Missouri lawyers many of our client needs will go unmet, potentially resulting in denials of justice that could have tragic consequences for families in our local communities.
How To Handle Debt Problems
Posted January 2006. If you do not pay your debts, your creditors might try to force you to pay them. A debt collector might call you or send you letters demanding that you pay the debt. Or your creditor might sue you.   If You Are Sued in Court for a Debt Consult a lawyer immediately! You may qualify for a Legal Aid attorney.  
Breitenfeld v. School District - What It Means to You and Your Children
Posted 2013.  This is a case in the St. Louis area concerning your child's right to transfer to another school in the area.  There are three documents that will provide you information and forms concerning your rights to transfer your child from an unaccredited school in a district to a credited school in the district in St. Louis County or an adjoining county.  This ruling applies to other school districts in Missouri, as well. The three documents are attached.

"Hot Weather Rule" - Utility Disconnections
What is the Hot Weather Rule?  The Hot Weather Rule prohibits utilities from disconnecting residential electricity service due to nonpayment of a utility bill during times of extreme heat.   When does the Hot Weather Rule go into effect? The Hot Weather Rules goes into effect every year from June 1 to September 30.

"The Cold Weather Rule" - Utility Disconnections
What is the Cold Weather Rule?  The Cold Weather Rule prohibits a utility company from disconnecting gas or electric utility service that is necessary to operate home heating equipment (such as a furnace) due to nonpayment of a utility bill during times of extreme cold.   When does the Cold Weather Rule go into effect?  The Cold Weather Rules goes into effect every year from November 1 through March 31.

What is Identity Theft?    Identity Theft is the largest consumer complaint filed with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).  If you have been the victim of identity theft, it could mean someone has used your name make to: 1.  make purchases, 2.  get credit cards, 3.  rent an apartment or 4.  obtain utilities without your permission.

Establishing advance directives regarding future health care decisions can ensure that a person’s wishes are met and can also relieve families from having to make difficult decisions at a time of great stress. The Missouri Bar has developed and makes available as a public service a “Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care and Health Care Directive” for use by the general public.  This form may be downloaded and/or photocopied as needed.
