A contract for deed is an agreement whereby a buyer of a home makes regular payments to a seller for an agreed period or up to an agreed amount (see sidebar on p. 3 of the attachment below for more information). The seller holds legal title to the property until the final payment is made.
What is a Joint Tenancy?
Joint tenancy is a form of ownership by two or more individuals together. It differs from other types of co-ownership in that the surviving joint tenant immediately becomes the owner of the whole property upon the death of the other joint tenant. This is called a “right of survivorship.”
What is Bankruptcy?
Bankruptcy is a legal proceeding in which a person who cannot pay his or her bills can get a fresh financial start. The right to file for bankruptcy is provided by federal law, and all bankruptcy cases are handled in federal court. Filing bankruptcy immediately stops all creditors from seeking to collect debts from a petitioner, at least until the debts are sorted out according to the law.
